China's official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell to 49.3 in October 2026 from 50.1 in September, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released on October 31 and reported by Reuters. The reading was below the market expectation of 50.0 and indicated the fastest contraction in three months.
The decline put the index back below the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction. Weak new export orders and insufficient domestic demand contributed to the change, highlighting the pressure that slower global trade demand can place on export-oriented manufacturers.

For manufacturers exposed to overseas demand, weaker new export orders may first affect production planning and purchasing decisions. The broader effect will depend on whether order weakness persists and whether domestic demand improves. A single monthly reading signals renewed contraction, but does not by itself establish how long that weakness will last.
