Tianqi Lithium reported revenue of RMB 18.279 billion for the first three quarters of 2026, up 147.11% year on year, in its third-quarter report released on the evening of October 25. Net profit attributable to shareholders reached RMB 5.602 billion, an increase of more than 30-fold from a year earlier.

The company attributed the earnings growth to the development of the new energy sector, stronger downstream demand and sharply higher selling prices for lithium products. Together, these factors point to improving business conditions for upstream lithium materials, with Tianqi’s profit growing substantially faster than its revenue.

Higher lithium prices have different implications across the supply chain

The results illustrate how stronger demand and higher product prices can reinforce earnings growth at an upstream lithium supplier. However, the figures do not establish how much each factor contributed. The scale of the profit increase should therefore be read alongside revenue growth and the company’s explanation, rather than treated as a measure of demand growth alone.

For downstream businesses purchasing lithium materials, sustained price increases could raise input costs. The effect on their earnings would depend on purchasing arrangements and their ability to reflect those costs in selling prices. An improvement in an upstream supplier’s profitability does not, by itself, establish that earnings are recovering equally across the lithium battery supply chain.

The key question is whether demand and lithium selling prices can continue to support earnings. Subsequent company disclosures on revenue, profitability and the drivers of performance will help show whether the improvement is sustained. Tianqi’s nine-month results provide evidence of a recovery in its own performance and a stronger upstream market, while the breadth and durability of the wider recovery remain subjects to watch.
