The U.S. goods and services trade deficit narrowed to $105 billion in September 2026, down $700 million, or 0.7%, from a revised $105.7 billion in August, according to data released jointly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Census Bureau. Exports rose 1.9% to $321.5 billion.

The figures show a modest reduction in the gap between the value of U.S. imports and exports. Although exports increased, the reported figures alone do not show how much of the change in the deficit came from goods versus services, or identify the products behind the movement.
For supply chain participants and cross-border traders, the change offers a broad measure of trade flows rather than a direct indication of demand for any particular product. Further releases may help show whether the narrower deficit and export growth persist.
